India creates history! Yes for the first time in history Indian politicians have showed this world a new form of politics-Gender politics. I still dont understand how media called it a red lettered day etc etc. What wonders me is tht already the much needed talented people are leaving India because of reservation and all tht stuff. The only thing to cheer about in this bill is tht the reservation is applicable only for Parliamentary seats and not in any science activity or research(lol). The bill says 1/3 of total seats in Parliament is reserved for women. But my sincere doubt is 'Is this really needed?' Y cant women fight and try to win all the 545 seats in the Parliament?? Every day i read news of women being harassed in their work place or somewhere. When women are not even able to roam freely what is the point in having a reservation for them? And this is gonna make all inexperienced women come into politics. For ex. in a particular constituency if Mr. X is supposed to contest and later if tht particular constituency is gonna be reserved for women tht Mr.X wont allow any women from his party to contest. Instead hes gonna make Mrs.X contest and tht Mrs.X is just gonna nod her head to whatever Mr.X says. Dont think tht such things dont happen. Think what happened in Bihar. When Lalu was thrown out he made Mrs.Lalu the CM of Bihar. The sad part is Mrs.Lalu doesnt know to sign also. What is the point in having such women in politics? This reservation is gonna create more and more problems. I dont think ordinary women will be empowered because of this bill. The biggest highlight is certain parties are asking for reservation for women belonging to Scheduled Caste and other backward castes. One thing is very clear. If u wanna learn politics or learn how to get votes(not thrgh fair means) better be a politican in India.

33% reservation for women in Parliament is no means a wrong one.It is really a good move. Now things are slowly changing in India also and try to accept it.Not every time people like Mrs.Lalu will contest the election. What about women like Mallika Sarabhai.Try to appreciate such moves. In the long run it might truly bring big changes.
U should understand tht am not against reservation for women.I just felt tht the UPA govt should have done all he base work and then introduced this bill if it was really necessary then. I dont think ppl like Mallika Sarabhai need reservation to contest. She contested even without reservation. And u should also understand tht her intention was just to oppose Mr.Advani and probably because of tht she lost. Once again am telling u am not against women into politics.
yes this is what is happening in india...
U cannot say that Mallika's intention was just opposing L.K.Advani.U must be aware of the various developmental projects she has taken under her.Talking anything is really very easy but once you plunge into action then u will feel the real practical problems.Bringing reformations and revolutions in a country is no means an easy task.
Actually there must be something really needs to be done for pulling all Indians to cast vote. That is where we really fail as morethan half of the Indian population are not bothered for casting vote.So electoral success definitely doesn't reflect the true success;it's just a relative one.
Hmmm... I guess I have to accept that women should be encouraged to take up a role in politics.Maybe this is the first presumed correct step in that direction. But 33%?Arent we jumping right ahead instead of taking it up slowly.Personally I feel that this might slow down the proceedings a bit.But then if the inclusion of women reduces the chaos that is quite common in parliament it is all worth it......
Good post again! Just read it and appreciated your views. But I think India is still a good 10 years away from abolishing any kind of reservation for obvious reasons. The advocates of gender reservation should have brought this bill some 50 years ago which would have liberated 'capable' women. You cannot really blame the bill if Rabri is getting elected. Finally it is the people who elect their representatives. So as literacy goes up, the quality and value of votes will also go up and one day we may have all 545 members educated and worthy of the seat. Another point is about the brain drain - you say qualified people are going out of the country. May be it is partially true. Most people leave the country for a better pay package than for lack of oportunities due to reservation. Once the salaries in India are at par with developed countries you will see a 'reverse brain drain' even if reservation exists. India is really at the brink of huge socio-economic changes and let us hope our politicians can take the right decisions through this period.
I liked your view - why not women aspire to get all the 545 seats. Our women should be thinking like that more than you and me!
India will never come out of this reservations no matter wat. am so fed up!!!!!!!!!!!
